Baby's Development at Week 39

At about 507mm — the size of a mini watermelon — your baby is officially full term! The lungs and brain are nearly complete, most of the vernix is gone, and your baby keeps gaining about 30 grams a day. Important antibodies are passing from you to your baby, giving protection for the first months of life. The brain will keep growing rapidly even after birth — it's already about 30% of its adult size.

Symptoms at Week 39

Strong Braxton Hicks
Pelvic pressure
Backache
Nesting instinct
Insomnia
Possible bloody show
Frequent urination
Emotional — excited and impatient

💡 Week 39 tip: Keep doing daily kick counts until birth

Your Body at Week 39

Full term! Your baby could arrive literally any day now. You might notice a 'bloody show' — pink-tinged mucus as the cervix changes — which can mean labor is near (hours to days). Emotions run high: excitement, impatience, anxiety, tears — all normal. Keep eating, hydrating, and resting. If your water breaks, note the time and call your doctor; if movements decrease, call right away.

Week 39 Checklist

  • Keep doing daily kick counts until birth
  • Watch for labor signs: water breaking, bloody show, regular contractions
  • Have everything ready — bag, car seat, birth partner
  • Rest whenever you can
  • Stay hydrated and eat nourishing foods
  • Call your doctor if movements decrease or water breaks
  • You're so close — breathe!

  • Mantente hidratada y come alimentos nutritivos
