Why Pregnancy Nausea Happens
Pregnancy nausea is caused by the rapid rise of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen in the first trimester. About 70–80% of pregnant women experience some nausea. Moderate nausea is actually a sign that the pregnancy is progressing well — higher hCG levels are associated with healthier pregnancies.
Nausea Week by Week
The Earliest Signs
Most women don't feel nausea yet, but some notice heightened smell sensitivity or a queasy feeling. hCG is rising rapidly but hasn't peaked.
Nausea Begins
This is when nausea typically kicks in for most women. Progesterone slows digestion, contributing to queasiness. Fatigue makes everything worse.
Peak Nausea
Weeks 8–10 are usually the worst. hCG levels are at their highest. Food aversions are strong. Vomiting may be daily. This is survival mode.
Slowly Improving
For most women, nausea begins to ease as hCG plateaus and the placenta starts taking over hormone production.
First Trimester Relief
Most women feel significantly better by week 13–14. Energy returns, appetite improves. For about 20% of women, nausea continues into the second trimester.
Lingering Nausea
A small percentage experience nausea throughout pregnancy. If severe, it may be hyperemesis gravidarum requiring medical treatment.
What Actually Helps
- Small, frequent meals — an empty stomach makes nausea worse. Eat every 2–3 hours
- Ginger — ginger tea, ginger chews, or ginger ale with real ginger has good evidence
- Vitamin B6 — 10–25mg three times daily is often recommended as first-line treatment
- Sea bands — acupressure wrist bands; low risk to try
- Cold foods — less aroma than hot foods, which helps with smell-triggered nausea
- Stay hydrated — even if you can't eat much, prioritize fluids. Ice chips count
When It's More Than Morning Sickness
Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) affects about 1–3% of pregnancies. Signs you need medical attention: can't keep any food or liquid down for 24+ hours, lost more than 5% of pre-pregnancy weight, signs of dehydration, or vomiting blood.
💡 Prescription options exist: Doxylamine + B6 and ondansetron are commonly prescribed for severe pregnancy nausea. If nausea is significantly affecting your daily life, talk to your OB — you don't have to suffer through it.
