Baby's Development at Week 38
Your baby is about 495mm long — the size of a large leek. All the organs are developed and in place, the brain is fine-tuning its connections, and your baby has a firm grasp you'll soon feel wrapped around your finger. The lungs are strong and producing plenty of surfactant. Your baby's head may be engaged deep in your pelvis, and those little lungs are ready for their big debut — the first cry is coming soon!

💡 Week 38 tip: Keep doing daily kick counts
Your Body at Week 38
You're in the final countdown, and every twinge makes you wonder: 'Is this it?' Braxton Hicks can be strong now — true labor contractions get longer, stronger, and closer together. Many doctors suggest the 5-1-1 rule (contractions 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour), but follow your own doctor's guidance. Keep moving gently, rest often, and keep that hospital bag by the door.
Week 38 Checklist
- Keep doing daily kick counts
- Know your doctor's guidance on when to go to the hospital
- Have the car seat installed and hospital bag ready
- Rest and conserve energy
- Stay hydrated and eat lightly but nourishingly
- Keep your phone charged and birth partner reachable
- Trust your body — you've prepared well
