Baby's Development at Week 20

Congratulations — you're halfway to meeting your baby! At about 256mm from head to heel — the size of a banana — your baby is swallowing amniotic fluid, which helps the digestive system practice, and producing meconium. Hair is growing on the head and the skin is thickening. This is the week of the anatomy scan: the sonographer will examine the brain, heart, kidneys, spine, and limbs in detail, and you can usually find out the sex if you want to know.

Symptoms at Week 20

Heartburn
Constipation
Mild swelling of feet and ankles
Leg cramps
Backaches
Increased vaginal discharge
Shortness of breath on exertion
Feeling baby move regularly

💡 Week 20 tip: Attend your anatomy scan (weeks 18–22)

Your Body at Week 20

Your uterus has reached your navel and your bump is unmistakable now. You may be gaining about half a kilo per week — steady, healthy weight gain. Mild swelling in the feet and ankles is common, especially by evening; put your feet up when you can. Some women notice breathlessness with exertion as the uterus pushes upward — slow down when you need to. Feeling regular movement is reassuring; mention to your doctor if you haven't felt anything yet.

Week 20 Checklist

  • Attend your anatomy scan (weeks 18–22)
  • Start researching childbirth classes
  • Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C for better absorption
  • Keep moisturizing your belly
  • Sleep on your side — left side is ideal for circulation
  • Stay hydrated and keep walking
  • Celebrate the halfway mark — you're doing amazing!

  • Asiste a tu ecografía morfológica (semanas 18–22)
  • Mantente hidratada y sigue caminando
